Senior Postdoctoral Scientist (Structural Biology & Biophysics)

University of Dundee

Within the University of Dundee, the newly announced Centre for Targeted Protein Degradation (CeTPD) due to open in early 2022 is being created as a first of its kind Centre leading a number of internationally significant projects in the burgeoning new area of translational chemical biology and targeted protein degradation. The goal of CeTPD is to innovate a next-generation of small-molecule technology platforms and modalities to advance chemical and biological insights and therapeutic targets related to human diseases. It aspires to achieve this by openly collaborate with academic, industrial and venture partners, and by training and inspiring the next-generation of research scientists and leaders.

We are seeking to appoint a Senior Postdoctoral Scientist, based in the group of Professor Alessio Ciulli, to join our expanding group based at the University of Dundee in the new CeTPD. The focus of this new role will be to drive and develop structural biology and biophysics focused approaches, including X-ray crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy, NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, surface plasmon resonance, isothermal titration calorimetry, amongst other biophysical techniques, to support and accelerate structure-based ligand and degrader drug design projects and understand compound mechanism of action. The overarching goal of these activities is to develop and apply small molecules as chemical tools to investigate new human target biology and as starting points for therapeutic development.

Your priorities will include:

  • Independently plan, manage, and perform biological and structural biology/biophysics experiments. Develop project proposals, timelines and resource needs, working closely with the Principal Investigator and CeTPD leadership. Monitor milestones and ensure deliverables are completed on time.
  • Collect and analyze experimental data and identify next steps based on outcomes.
  • Train research technicians and other scientific staff in discipline methods/techniques.
  • Significantly contribute to the quality and delivery of mentorship and training of scientists within own discipline across the CeTPD.
  • Lead implementation of best practices within own discipline across all CeTPD teams.

Who we’re looking for:

  • Experience of working in a translational industrial or academic setting.
  • Track record of solving technical challenges within own discipline that contribute to project understanding and/or advancement.
  • Demonstrated high level performance in scientific leadership, communication and strategy to deliver project goals.
  • Exceptionally strong communicational and relational skills.
  • A team player with the ability to work using own initiative, deliver outputs within agreed timeframes and work under pressure.
