Commercialisation Lead/Entrepreneur in Residence

The College of Social Sciences at the University of Birmingham is committed to research and education that drives up social mobility, equity, inclusion and sustainability and thereby transforms the lives of our students and communities. We continually seek to maximise the impact that our research has on the lives of our local and global communities and through the appointment of a dedicated Commercialisation Lead will undertake scoping, training and awareness-raising activities to support social scientists across the University to understand commercial outlets for their research and impact activities.

The Commercialisation Lead will working directly with the Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor for Impact & Engagement and the Directors of Impact and Engagement in the relevant Colleges, as well as relevant professional services teams around impact and business engagement. As part of an Economic and Social Research Council Impact Acceleration project, the Commercialisation Lead will collate and coordinate best practice in social sciences commercialisation across the University, as well as reach out to other universities to understand and influence best practice in the sector.

In addition to identifying a small number of exemplar projects on the cusp of being viable for commercialisation, which will be actively supported to explore and develop their business plan and funding, the Commercialisation Lead will undertake an evaluation of the training and support needs of academic staff, develop and deliver training and commercialisation workshops. The role will provide academic and professional services staff with a consistent point of support as well as facilitate cross-institutional knowledge exchange. 

We are seeking candidates with an evidenced interest in the commercialisation of Social Sciences, a track record of successful business development and entrepreneurship, and a collaborative, inclusive, and innovative approach to engagement.

Educated to Degree level (or equivalent level qualifications) plus significant relevant practical experience – where no equivalent qualification is held substantial practical relevant experience and expertise in a series of progressively more demanding roles will be required.
