The Post

The SIEC Business Innovation Officer will take a lead role in developing the portfolio of commercial opportunities including research services, consultancy and CPD, aligned to the work of Scotland’s International Environment Centre (SIEC). The role will focus on maximising the revenue potential and enhancing SIEC’s reach in through the application of its research expertise and resulting innovation to support businesses and other organisations develop environmentally sustainable products, technologies, services and operations. Reporting to the Head of Business Engagement & Development within Innovation and Enterprise Services, they will work closely with the SIEC Manager, who leads and co-ordinates the Business Accelerator activities within SIEC, and colleagues from across the Research, Innovation and Business Engagement Directorate, other Professional Services, and Academic Faculties.

This role will be based primarily in Alloa and will involve agile working within the University framework, including working away from the office as required to engage effectively with partners and stakeholders.

Description of Duties 

  • Drive activity to develop commercial opportunities around research, consultancy and CPD opportunities, focusing on maximising impact in the form of outputs and benefits for the city region as well as revenue potential 
  • Monitor and review the portfolio of intellectual property arising from SIEC activities in order to identify and pursue commercial opportunities 
  • Manage the development of proposals in relation to commercial opportunities ensuring that they meet customer need and provide the appropriate revenue return for SIEC
  • Establish and manage external networks through which business development can be pursued, including with intermediaries 

Essential Criteria 

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent or employment experience across a range of roles with increasing levels of responsibility
  • Practical experience in a directly relevant role, ideally within the HE or funder sector, including experience of working successfully in the area of innovation and business development
  • Experience of working successfully within complex regulations / frameworks
  • Knowledge of the current business landscape and of the wider policy context relevant to SIEC, along with the capability to understand the impact on the ongoing operation and development of related opportunities
