An opportunity has arisen for a highly ambitious, flexible and committed Researcher to join the team to investigate the role of neuronal senescence in dementia. This is a replacement post, for one year, to continue the work on this project. You will join an internationally recognised research group in a vibrant and stimulating environment within SITraN. You will have a PhD in a neuroscience related subject, an interest and experience in neurodegeneration and experience of working with human tissue, including expertise in histological techniques and transcriptomic analysis. You will have an ability to work within a group and to liaise with collaborators. You will also be able to contribute to supervision of students at undergraduate and postgraduate level. This post, funded by Alzheimers Research UK, contributes to efforts in the neuropathology group to understand pathological factors contributing to human late-life dementia

The post is based in the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN), which is part of the Department of Neuroscience. SITraN (www.sitran.org) is a purpose built research facility, which was opened in November 2010 by Her Majesty the Queen. The Institute houses clinical and basic scientists and the primary focus is research into neurodegenerative disorders such as Motor Neurone Disease (MND), Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. The neuropathology group researches dementia using a number of methods but with a particular focus on the use of donated human autopsy tissue.

This project will use tissue from the Cognitive Function and Ageing Study (www.cfas.ac.uk), a population-representative study with a neuropathology cohort. Prof Wharton and Dr Simpson lead and supervise CFAS neuropathology studies in Sheffield. The Sheffield group works closely with the CFAS study lead, Prof Carol Brayne, in Cambridge, and the CFAS lead statistician, Prof Matthews, in Newcastle.
