This is a new role, based in the Faculty of Social Sciences, that will support the development of a robust research impact pipeline across York’s social sciences portfolio to help the Faculty with its mission to achieve social change for public good. Line managed by the Faculty Research Impact Manager, you will work closely with the Faculty leadership team to support this ambitious new approach to impact support and evaluation, ahead of the next iteration of the Research Excellence Framework (REF). The role is supported by a Faculty Impact administrator, and is available on a full-time, open contract.

Role

You will support academic departments and staff with the ongoing development of priority impact and knowledge exchange activities. This will include: supporting the disbursement of impact related resources, including ESRC Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) funds; the organisation of capacity building and training activities; and one-to-one support for academic staff. The overriding objective of the role is to build upon York’s excellent performance in the recent Research Excellence Framework (REF2021), ensuring that our research impact pipeline remains robust.

You will also:

  • Take a lead role in advising and supporting the development of impact activities within social sciences departments, and offering expert advice on external requirements and best practice
  • Work with Faculty leadership to identify areas of strength and weakness, and put in place strategies - and associated activities - to build upon areas of strength and seed new impact activities
  • Support impact training, identifying additional training needs in relation to the faculty REF impact pipeline
  • Support the building of high quality evaluation into priority impact projects
  • Liaise with a variety of external stakeholders, including industry, policymakers and practitioners to build relationships that maximise the opportunities for impact
  • Support the development of institution-wide best practice around future REF impact case study development and selection
  • Provide day-to-day management of the ESRC IAA

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

Required skills and qualities include:

  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent professional experience)
  • Experience of providing support for and delivery of Social Sciences research, knowledge exchange, impact and/or partnership development at a university or similar organisation
  • Experience of delivering presentations, training sessions and bespoke project support to a variety of audiences
  • Knowledge and understanding of social sciences research, research impact and knowledge exchange in a higher education environment
  • An awareness of the different forms of research impact and knowledge exchange, and its importance to higher education
  • An understanding of the role and value of research outcomes and evidence within the social science disciplines
  • The ability to lead projects and gather, analyse, interpret and report complex data/information
  • The ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written formats, including the use of a variety of digital tools
