Business Manager - Genomic Surveillance Unit

About the Role

In this complex and multifaceted role, the Business Manager will:

  • Be responsible for providing detailed financial tracking, reporting and forecasting across all GSU funding streams.
  • Ensure compliance with all internal policies, processes and procedures.
  • Manage the third-party funding portfolio pre and post-award.
  • Implement key decisions and follow up to ensure completion.

This will involve understanding the connectivity between the programmes of activity, how they are collectively being driven forwards, and how they complement each other and yet remain distinct. With an awareness of the bigger picture across Sanger and in the context of genomics and global health, the role will provide support to develop and implement proportional and pragmatic systems that facilitate the international-scale projects and partnerships necessary to become the world leader in delivering longitudinal genomic data on important pathogen and vector species.

About You

To excel in this role, you should have extensive experience in delivering a high-quality business management function.

You should be a highly organised, efficient, self-motivated, strategic thinker who is able to work independently in a dynamic environment with flexibility, adjusting to varying priorities and finding solutions to challenges that arise.

You will have experience in developing and maintaining strategic relationships and be comfortable working in a confidential environment, building effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of seniority.

Your personal qualities will include professionalism, personal drive, trustworthiness and the ability to work collaboratively.

Essential Skills

  • Experience working in a large-scale research or operational commercial setting providing operational governance support to delivery teams
  • Fluency in developing, handling and reporting complex budgets
  • Experience managing pre and post-award third-party funding applications and reporting
  • Experience in building relationships and networks to influence and manage internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience in conveying complex ideas/project landscapes to a varied internal and external audience
  • Finding solutions to complicated or multifaceted problems with a flexible approach applying business management principles to manage expectations
  • Ability to quickly understand technical and process challenges and break down complex problems into actionable steps
  • High level of organisational skills with attention to detail to be able to manage multiple competing priorities effectively
  • Highly developed communication skills with experience in dealing with people at all levels successfully
  • Ability to make decisions while working in a frequently changing environment with the capability to interpret management information
  • Demonstrates initiative, creativity, flexibility and a personal ethos of integrity
  • Ability to work independently

Salary: £52,000 to £62,800 dependent on experience.
