This is a re-advertised post - previous applicants should not re-apply.

This is a very exciting opportunity to work within a collaborative EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) “Prosperity Partnership” project, funded under the UKRI’s Building a Secure and Resilient World strategic theme, which has SP Energy Networks as the industry lead, involves a number of other industrial partners and supporters, and also includes the Universities of Glasgow, St Andrew’s and Heriot-Watt. This Partnership will create an Integrated Energy System-Digital Twin (IES-DT) to facilitate reliable, resilient, affordable, low-carbon, multi-vector energy systems of the future.

A summary of the research hypothesis is, “how will future multi-vector energy networks, with electrical systems as a backbone, behave for a range of scenarios and timescales, and how can an integrated DT of these networks and their connected vectors/prosumers be used to proactively identify, quantify and understand challenges and enable the creation of associated potential solutions?”.

We are seeking a researcher/research software engineer to join the project on a full-time basis to lead and work on the Strathclyde elements of the project. This will involve energy modelling and simulation, computer software development and elements of computer science, carrying out research and development of digital twins of future electrical systems with interfaces to other energy vectors, and, working very closely as part of an integrated team with other academics and researchers, and assisting in the supervision of PhD students at Strathclyde and at the other industry and university partners. Candidates will be expected to have expertise and track record in some or all of the areas listed below. There will be two appointments, and individuals with complementary expertise will be considered, so please do apply even if you only meet some of the criteria below:

  • Power and energy systems – including operation, control and management of such systems. Ideally, candidates may have worked and have understandings of the interactions (now and in the future) between electrical systems and other energy vectors and systems (e.g. heat, hydrogen, etc.).
  • Modelling and simulation (in power and energy systems, but expertise in other domains will also be considered – again, experience in modelling multi-vector energy systems would be particularly welcome).
  • Digital twin development in power and energy systems – experience in other application domains is also welcome.
  • Data Science – handling and processing large data sets (experience across multiple domains welcome).
  • Artificial Intelligence – including predictive modelling, pattern analysis and recognition.
  • Software design, development and testing experience – ideally in power and energy, but experience in other areas will also be considered.

You will have an ability to plan and organise research programmes, to ensure successful completion and you will have experience of planning and organising workloads, including the ability to supervise and delegate work. You will have an ability to work within a team environment and to lead teams and excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to listen, engage and persuade, and to present complex information in an accessible way to a range of audiences.

Whilst Research Fellows are sought, applications from candidates at Research Associate level may also be considered. Dependent on the profile and experience of the candidate the appointment may be made at a lower level (RS07 £36,024 - £44,263) and duties will be adjusted to reflect the grade of the post.
