Applications are invited for a Research Assistant post working with Professor Albert Ong and Dr Andrew Streets (Academic Nephrology) to investigate the role of long non-coding RNAs in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) and their roles in the post-transcriptional regulation of disease pathways, with a view to identifying novel biomarkers for personalised medicine and developing new therapeutics for precision medicine. The Kidney Genetics Group led by Professor Ong is one of the world’s leading research groups working on ADPKD, the major genetic cause of kidney failure in man.

ADPKD is the major genetic disease leading to kidney failure in man and affects around 1 in 1000 people. In the UK, around 70,000 patients are affected and around 8-9 million individuals globally.

You should have a relevant first degree and a high level of enthusiasm for scientific research. Specific skills in molecular biology, cell biology, protein biochemistry, microscopy will be essential. Prior experience in RNA research would be an advantage. You will have excellent communication and organisational skills, be able to work effectively, flexibly, independently and as part of a team, to deliver key deadlines relevant to the project. The post would suit an early-career researcher with a strong set of technical skills who wishes to develop a career in translational research and contribute to improvements in patient care.

The post is full-time and fixed-term for 24 months in the first instance.
