Located in Bloomsbury, at the heart of the diverse and cosmopolitan city of London, the German Historical Institute London (GHIL) is an academically independent institution and forms part of the Max Weber Foundation – German Humanities Institutes Abroad. It focuses on researching British– German relations, British history, and colonial history, often from a comparative, transcultural, and global perspective.

IT Support Engineer at the German Historical Institute London

About your role:

This is a full-time position (40h/week); job-sharing will be considered if suitable complementary candidates are available. The starting annual salary is between £41,286 and £44,136, depending on professional experience. The place of employment is London with limited mobile working opportunities. Occasional evening or Saturday work may be required due to events at the institute.

As an IT Support Engineer, you will be responsible for maintaining the information and communication technology of the GHIL, one of twelve member institutes of the Max Weber Foundation. Working in coordination with the office in Bonn, which manages foundation-wide applied services and IT infrastructures shared by all institutes, you will act as the first point of contact for around 35 employees in London. As part of the research services team at the GHIL, you will provide advice and assistance to colleagues in all areas of the institute, whether scholars, librarians, or administrators.

Duties comprise:

  • Providing day-to-day local and remote desktop support to your colleagues
  • Basic troubleshooting on Windows, Android, Mac, and iOS devices
  • Coordinating on-site service providers and the procurement of hardware and software
  • Cooperating closely with the IT team in the Bonn office, e.g. in IT planning and design or the creation of IT frameworks and other concepts
  • Network support and troubleshooting
  • Helping to organize, prepare, supervise, and follow-up on internal and external events, in particular, but not only, with regard to IT applications
  • Collaborating on the institute's digitization projects
  • Participating in the IT working group of the Max Weber Foundation
  • Consulting with the IT security officer in Bonn

There will also be opportunities to undertake challenging projects and extend your skill set and experience in various areas. The institute offers further IT training where possible and, if you are interested, German courses.

About you:

  • Completed IT degree, IT apprenticeship, advanced training, or comparable professional experience
  • Significant experience in IT-related areas
  • A proactive sense of initiative and a focus on customer service
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team
  • Solution-oriented with a strong sense of responsibility
  • Good PC and network troubleshooting skills and advanced understanding of MS Office 365, Zoom, Windows, and MacOS
  • Knowledge of how to operate video conferencing systems

Advantageous:

  • Understanding of virtualization concepts
  • Knowledge of backup systems
  • Experience in implementing IT projects
  • Experience in non-profit/academic sector
  • Optional German language skills

In principle, the salary is taxable in Germany; the only exception is for British nationals who do not also have German citizenship. Applicants should be able to prove their right to work in the UK.
