Residence Life Manager

Northeastern University London (the University) is hiring a Residence Life Manager (RLM) to be based in London, England. Under the supervision of the Head of Residence Services, RLMs are responsible for the day-to-day management of the residential experience for all Northeastern University London or Northeastern First Year Pathway Programme students living in university partnered residence halls.

RLMs will directly line manage 2 Residence Life Supervisors (RLSs), and collectively oversee the RLS team, to aid in the management of the Residence Life Program which helps support the physical, emotional, social, and academic needs of approximately 1200 Northeastern University first-year students and/or study abroad students participating across multiple programs.

RLMs will work collaboratively to support the safety and wellbeing of students and contribute to the development and overall success of the students and the institution.

This is an in-person position that requires staff to work from a campus location at least four days a week. The person in this role will serve within an on-call rotation and will be required to work occasional non-traditional hours (evenings, weekends, bank holidays, etc.).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise, support, and regularly evaluate a team of 1-2 Residence Life Supervisors and their teams of live-in Residence Life Coordinators
    • Facilitate Residence Life Leadership meetings in a 1:1 and team environment to provide both institutional and departmental updates.
    • Manage the assigned programming budget and oversee the development of the Northeastern University London programming model to foster community.
    • Oversee the Training, Onboarding and ongoing Professional Development of Residence Life Supervisors.
  • Provide day-to-day management of the live-in Residence Life team.
  • Assist Residence Life Supervisors to monitor and engage in conversations regarding staff performance; including commencing and participation with University policies and procedures.
  • Serve on various Northeastern University London and Northeastern University Boston working groups/committees to improve on-site communication and operations.
  • Continuously show innovation and develop best practice, particularly in relation to the University’s Residence Life Policy and wider procedures.
  • With support from the Residence Life Supervisor(s), develop training and programming initiatives to aid the S/RLCs develop skills in programming, crisis management, conduct and conflict resolution, leadership skill building, DEI work, identity development, and creating a sense of belonging, etc.         
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for cases requiring escalation.
  • Be a key member of the University’s Case Management Team, reporting on students of concern, and showing leadership when planning and responding to any required actions.
  • Act as a key contact point in the development of the Northeastern University Boston pathway programs in London, working collaboratively with colleagues at other Global Network sites (Boston & New York).
  • Complete administrative tasks as required such as monitoring the shared
  • Residence Life inbox, creating and assigning Global Incident Report Forms from/for Northeastern University Boston, organising student information, approving RLC budget requests, etc.
  • During crises and escalated emergencies display clarity of thought, clear leadership and decisive action to achieve clear resolutions prioritising demonstrated staff and student wellbeing throughout.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with third-party accommodation providers. Managing escalated concerns and/or complaints from students regarding third party responsibilities (Maintenance, noise, security, etc.)Foster a positive work environment with a good team spirit, including with the wider support teams, with student experience at the forefront of all efforts.
  • Undertake other duties as assigned by the Head of Residence Services and in the spirit of positive teamwork.

 Personal Specification Criteria (Essential [E] / Desirable [D])

  • Bachelor’s degree [E], Master’s degree in higher education, social work, or relevant field [D]
  • Proven experience within Residence Life or aligned Higher Education areas [E]
  • Significant experience living within student residence halls, managing crises, significant incidents and students of concern [E]
  • Experience with supervision, leading teams, and managing diverse groups of staff [E]
  • Experience living, working or studying abroad [D]
  • Experience with crisis management, mediation, and conflict resolution [E]
  • Flexibility and demonstrated ability to excel in fast-paced environments, demonstrate sound judgement and take decisive actions [E]
  • Experience being part of developing processes and procedures as they apply to logistics and student wellbeing when running a Residence Life program [D]
  • Experience with the U.S. Higher Education system and the societal and individual challenges students face within this system [D]
  • Experience developing programming models, particularly those that reflect an international element of the student experience [D]
  • Proven ability to balance a professional relationship with students and staff when living and working in close proximity [D]
  • Considerable experience appropriately handling sensitive information in line with GDPR and FERPA regulations [E]
  • Experience with budget planning, management and forecasting [D]
