The Department of Psychology is seeking to appoint up to four ambitious research-driven scientists at Lecturer level. Applicants should be developing a reputation in their field, with recent high-quality publications that address major questions, and have clear potential to attract external grant funding. Recruitment will be broad in scope, but with the aim of bringing in individuals who both complement and extend the Department’s current research and teaching strengths.
Psychology at York is one of the UK’s leading psychology departments and has been placed among the World’s top 100 departments of psychology in the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings every year since 2013. In the most recent nationwide assessment of research quality (REF 2014) Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience at the University of York was ranked fourth for overall performance and second for the quality of research papers, with 95% being classified as world-leading or internationally excellent. We are also committed to ensuring that all members of staff achieve their full potential in a supportive, friendly, flexible and responsive work environment: In 2007 we received the first Athena SWAN Silver Award for a psychology department and in 2019 we received Gold.

We have a broad range of interests spanning high-level cognitive acts such as communication, language and memory to low level visual and auditory perception, with understanding of basic mechanisms, changes over the lifespan, cross-cultural and individuals differences as key cross-cutting themes (https://www.york.ac.uk/psychology/research/, http://www.york.ac.uk/psychology/staff). Many of our staff carry out interdisciplinary research. Our belief is that when different disciplines interact and views are allowed to conflict, that this can promote highly original and creative output. We welcome candidates who share these values.
Candidates would be expected to develop research objectives, projects, outputs and funding proposals and carry out individual or collaborative research projects relating to their area of research. Candidates would also be expected to be dedicated teachers of higher education and contribute to the design and delivery of our undergraduate and/or masters programmes, alongside making an important contribution to the running of the Department through administrative responsibilities.
