Job purpose

BBSRC is seeking an Evidence and Evaluation Manager to support the collection and subsequent analysis of research outcomes data. The role is an integral part of the wider evidence and evaluation team, providing critical data management and analytics expertise that enables BBSRC to demonstrate the value of its research investments through data, monitoring and evaluation. The role will be located in BBSRC’s Strategic Planning, Evidence and Engagement Domain. There will be opportunities to work with the analyst community within BBSRC and across UKRI.

Key responsibilities of the role:

  • outcomes collection system is appropriately refreshed and kept up-to-date.
  • Support the management, analysis and use of research outcomes data, ensuring that these data contribute to the wider BBSRC evidence base of performance, achievement and impact.
  • Promote the accessibility and use of research outcomes data within BBSRC, supporting colleagues identify the most appropriate approaches for their own analyses
  • Develop a detailed understanding of BBSRC’s research outcomes dataset, to ensure that technical information can be clearly explained to stakeholders, that data are interpreted accurately, and that the implications and uncertainties of any analysis are appropriately described.
  • Contribute to the activities of the Evidence and Evaluation team, deploying analytics approaches to support the monitoring and evaluation of BBSRC’s investments and the development of impact evidence.
  • Raising and maintaining awareness among the research community of the importance of research outcomes reporting.
  • Support the enrichment of BBSRC outcomes data through linking with other datasets, with the aim of providing further insight. In particular, support the enrichment of BBSRC publications data through additional bibliometric analysis (e.g. using tools such as Web of Science, InCites and Dimensions).
  • Contribute to BBSRC’s knowledge and understanding of research outcomes data, maintaining awareness of current best practice and latest thinking on approaches to analysis.
  • Support the development and implementation of policy, processes and systems for the collection of research outcomes data, engaging with colleagues across UKRI to ensure consistent and harmonised operation of UKRI’s research outcomes collection system.

Person Specification

Shortlisting criteria:

  • Educated to a degree level and/or with equivalent, relevant experience.
  • A high level of computer proficiency, including advanced working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel.
  • Excellent analytical and numeracy skills, with the ability to analyse complex data and derive meaningful information accurately and responsibly.
  • Experience of data management, including working with databases and complex datasets.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, with the ability to produce clear and well-structured documents for internal and external audiences.
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to build effective working relationships with others, both within the organisation and externally.
  • An understanding and an interest in the aims and objectives of BBSRC.
