The Ossmy lab at the Centre for Brain and Cognitive Development, (CBCD), Department of Psychological Sciences at Birkbeck University of London, is seeking a postdoctoral scientist to play a key role in delivering a UKRI-funded research project investigating the emergence of problem solving skills.
Specifically, the project tests how variety in children's everyday experience enhances problem-solving skills by calibrating a real-time interactive system of perceptual, neural, and motor processes, which in turn facilitates subsequent cognitive skills at a later age.
You will lead an UKRI ESRC-funded longitudinal study that uses object manipulation as a model system for testing the emergence of problem-solving skills in pre-schoolers.
We are looking for candidates with broad knowledge and experience in developmental psychology/neuroscience, who tested scientific questions by running studies within a university lab setting.
Experience with conducting home studies and/or experience using other behavioural/neural techniques (EEG, eye tracking, motion tracking) would be an advantage.
We are looking for candidates with knowledge of statistical methods who have significant experience in analysing experimental behavioural and neural data. Programming skills in Matlab or R or Python are required.
This post will require working with young children and liaising with parents and therefore requires excellent communications skills and willingness to work flexibly including weekends and school holidays (due to the availability of participant groups).
A critical part of your role will include mentoring graduate and undergraduate students who take part in the project. This will make you competitive for a future faculty position. Therefore, we require leadership, excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication, and good attention to details.
