We have a brand-new amazing opportunity within our Electronics & Software Faculty Services for those who have experience in AI and systems development.

This opportunity focuses on creating, conducting and advising on scientific and research computing protocols, data analysis, software simulation, digital architecture and coding including machine learning. Other responsibilities will include:

  • Providing technical support for research and teaching activities across the Faculty, including upskilling technical colleagues
  • The training and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students in the safe use of the equipment
  • Taking a lead role in the provision of “scientific data” across research laboratories within the Faculty
  • Liaise with the university’s high-performance computing (HPC) team and assist staff and students with their HPC and cloud computing needs. This will include IOT-based network data.

The role also has the potential to become an interface between initial software-based simulation which informs and then hands over to technical services colleagues to run physical testing elsewhere in the faculty (the latter using the extensive range of physical testing equipment available).

About you

You will need to have excellent communication skills as you will be liaising with academics, researchers and students. You will also need:

  • Relevant computer science or computing-based scientific, engineering or mathematics qualifications at undergraduate and/or postgraduate degree level or equivalent or experience working in a relevant field
  • Experience of designing solutions to scientific & research computing problems
  • Experience with at least two programming languages used for research, such as Python, C, C++, R, Fortran, OpenCL, Julia
  • Experience of creating and optimising simulations including machine learning-based models
  • Experience evaluating relevant scientific and/or engineering information and concepts to propose solutions to problems

The successful applicant will be given the opportunity to complete a fully funded Level 7 apprenticeship (equivalent to Masters degree level) in Artificial Intelligence, subject to meeting the eligibility criteria for the scheme.

The Faculty of Engineering & Design's Technical Services is supported by a diverse team of around 70 highly skilled and dedicated technicians covering a wide range of engineering disciplines eg. workshops, manufacturing, laboratory, electronics, automotive, instrumentation and civil.
