THE PROJECT

The University of Essex in partnership with Iceni Projects Ltd offers an exciting opportunity to a graduate with the relevant skills and knowledge to significantly increase the productivity and capacity of a major independent planning consultancy and lay the foundations for diversification of revenue generation. This is to be achieved through the implementation of novel automation, data science and natural language processing tools for the planning consultancy process. This post is fixed term for 32 months and is based at Iceni Projects Limited offices in London.

DUTIES OF THE POST

The duties of the post will include:

  • Digitise and automate the process of generating an impact assessment report.
  • Extend automation to other reports produced in the business.
  • Lead the commercial exploitation of a digital approach.
  • Use regression and clustering algorithms to study the numeric data that is used as part of impact assessments.
  • Process and analyse text data.
  • Perform sentiment analysis on people’s feelings about a proposed development.
  • Transferring machine learning knowledge to other Iceni employees.
  • Design and evaluation of machine learning algorithms.
  • Developing effective data collection and pre-processing techniques.
  • Developing effective data-warehousing.
  • Developing machine learning models to learn patterns from the data.
  • Developing methods to model temporal dynamics in the data.
  • Managing a complex project with multiple stakeholders, monitoring and reporting on progress and ensuring objectives are met.
  • Co-authoring articles in collaboration with academics at the University of Essex.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • BSc in Computer Science, Mathematics or a related discipline
  • MSc in Data Science, Machine Learning or equivalent post-graduate qualification, or equivalent industry experience.
  • A deep understanding of the principles and best practice in Machine Learning with a focus on NLP and sentiment analysis.
  • Experience of deploying information retrieval techniques and tools such as Elasticsearch.
  • Experience deploying and tuning regression algorithms such as linear regression, XGBoost, Support Vector Regression, and Stochastic Gradient Descent.
  • Programming skills in appropriate languages such as Python/C/Java and using open-source libraries for data analysis and visualisation tasks.
  • Experience deploying and tuning clustering algorithms.
  • Experience using relational databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL or Redis.
  • Experience of integrating social media data to generate inferences and sentiment.
  • Ability to present highly technical information to non-technical colleagues.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively in a small team.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines; excellent time management and organisational skills.
  • High initiative and ability to perform independent research.
  • Proactive and committed to the project.
